First edition. An uncommon book, particularly so in the jacket. "As captain of the Aurora during Mawson's 1911-14 expedition, Davis was able to produce one of the few first-hand accounts available in print. His publishers, however, clearly had wartime difficulties with the book, most often seen today with its gilt lettering and decoration badly faded" (Taurus). This is a very well-preserved copy with the design to the front board still bright, and the attractive jacket largely intact. Howgego III, M28; Taurus 101. Octavo. Original blue buckram, title gilt to the spine and to front board together with a ship portrait. With dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 40 other plates, 5 maps as plates, numerous diagrams, sketches and maps to the text, some full-page, folding map at the rear. Spine lettering oxidised, frontispiece with some short splits at the fore-edge, now professionally repaired, endpapers differentially browned, light toning and some marginal foxing, but overall very good in slightly rubbed and soiled jacket, lacking a few chips, but largely pictorially and textually complete. Descripción hardcover. 2007 reprint. 183pp, decorative boards, hardback, small bump to top corners, near Fine. The decorative boards closely match the design and appearance of the original edition retaining much of the character of the original First Edition. Mawson and Davis became closely acquainted during Shackleton's 1907-9 expedition, and Mawson later recruited Davis to be captain of the Aurora on the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Originally published in a small edition in 1919 this is the record of the voyages of Aurora in Southern Waters, written from a sailor's point of view. Built in 1876 as an Arctic whaler Aurora, though old and battered, captained by Davis, managed three Antarctic voyages in support of Mawson and his men. This attractive facsimile of the original edition makes a scarce and fascinating book readily available. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service. Nº de ref. del artículo: 72427
