An interesting survey of arts in California in the 60's. Some illustrations. The California Arts Commission was created in 1963 to encourage artistic expression. The commission was dissolved in 1975 and reorganized as the California Arts Council (CAC). The original commission was not empowered to administer funds or promote cultural and artistic programs. The commission's main function was to show government solidarity with private institutions and organizations concerned with the arts. [From Introduction] This report, summarizing the cultural needs and resources of the State of California, was begun in the latter part of 1964 and completed in January, 1966. It was based on personal interviews, testimony before the Commission at meetings in various parts of the State, and mailed questionnaires to officers and leaders of art and cultural organizations and institutions. The data submitted in the questionnaires cover the twelve-month period of July, 1963, through June, 1964. The investigation was directed to major population areas and to a sampling of cities and towns throughout the State representing differences in size, and in social, economic, and geographic characteristics. . .The survey concerned itself only with the organizations currently engaged in activities in the performing arts (theater, music, dance) and in the visual arts (painting, sculpture, allied arts and crafts). No attempt was made to evaluate the quality of either individual or group performances or exhibitions.
