The Art Journal for 1876 - Volume II. Printed in New York City by D. Appleton and Company. 1876, 380 pp, 13 x 10 , 3/4 leather folio. In as-is condition, with rubbing and wear to boards and spine. Front board fully split from text block at front. Some parts of text block loose. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Illustrations remain in good condition. Includes full-page plates and smaller illustrations within text pages. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. Annual art periodical issued as VOLUME II for 1876. vi, 380 pages. Hardcover: H 32.75cm x L 25.75cm. Original half-leather binding: leather spine with four raised bands, cloth boards with leather corners. Surface scuffing to spine with with gilt stamped lettering in two compartments still bright; obtrusively strong mottling to front board causing flaking loss to gilt lettering; milder mottling to rear board; slender cloth loss along board edges with some shallow overlapping cloth loss into inner board margins; mild wear at both boards' top leather corners. All edges gilt; marbled endpapers; toning to ffep verso, front fly, rear fly, and rfep recto; tear to front fly along with old ink signature "Lucy. Banks." at top; some toning and foxing with a few occasional small stains to interior leaves. Binding is firm. Else a good+ copy. Features numerous b/w plates with tissue guard sheets throughout. Appleton's Art Journal-New Series began with Volume I which was issued in 1875 with Volume 6 issued in 1880; publisher Patterson & Neilson issued unnumbered annual volumes from 1881 to 1886. One of ten children of George Hampton Young who owned the architecturally renowned Waverly Plantation on the west bank of the Tombigbee River between Columbus and West Point, Mississippi, Lucy Watkins Young (1841-1933) married widower, Confederate Army veteran, and Columbus physician Lt. Col. James Oliver Banks (1829-1904) in May 1870. Their marriage produced five children all of whom survived to adulthood and the Banks-Young progeny enjoyed Mississippi and Alabama real estate and land holdings in the cities of Columbus and Eutaw as well as in Lowndes County, Clay County, Tuscaloosa County, and Greene County.
