Meeting in Ankara during 7-11 Feb 1966, the Foreign Ministers of Iraq and Turkey came to an understanding about improving the border road linking Ankara to Baghdad. A Border Bridge downstream of the confluence of the Hazil and Khabur Rivers would connect Ankara via Silope, Cizre, Midyat and Mardin on the Turkish side, and Baghdad via Zakho, Mosul and Baiji on the Iraqi side. Recognising the strategic importance of quick completion for promoting social, economic and touristic relations between the two countries, they came to agreements relating to the Khabur Bridge's location; geometry and design standards for road and Bridge; phases of survey, design and documentation for the Bridge; construction; maintenance; time schedule; and administrative matters (ref.
