Early tan paper boards. 8vo. 32, (8)pp. Facsimile printing of 1582 original edition. 1 of 45 total copies printed. An account of the Raid of Ruthven by the Scotch divine and politician. After several failed ministries John Colville ingratiated himself in the Scottish court and in November 1578 he was appoined master of requests. At this period he became acquainted with the English ambassadors, and for many years he furnished secret information to Queen Elizabeth's government concerning the political affairs of Scotland. After the execution of the Earl of Morton in June 1581, Colville attached himself to the protestant faction of which the Earl of Gowrie was the leader. He took part in the raid of Ruthven in August 1582 and this work "Ane Declaratioun", a manifesto issued in vindication of the raid, is attributed to his pen (DNB). There are 8 pages of notes at the end of the text by J.M. (James Maidment). He notes "The Tract here presented to the public, is reprinted from a copy supposed to be unique, preserved in the library of the Faculty of Advocates". He also writes: "As the "Declaration" is valuable, both as an interesting historical document, and as a curious specimen of the Scottish language at the time, a few copies have been reprinted, of which forty-five are for sale". The notes are dated 4th February, 1822. A very scarce work. The text is in good condition with some light tanning and wear. There is a quarter-sized stain in the lower corner of the flyleaf, title and first 4 text pages and the title page is also chipped in that corner with a small piece missing. The binding is good with some spotting to the covers and with the spine chipped away. N° de ref. de la librería
