(Larned) Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was an early American ethnologist and expert on Native American culture. He was well-known for his Congress-commissioned study on United States Indian tribes beginning in 1851. Leading up to this study, Schoolcraft published Oneota, Characteristics of the Red Race of America in 1845, a work which was later published under the title The American Tribes .
