(Larned) Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was an early American ethnologist and expert on Native American culture. He was well-known for his Congress-commissioned study on United States Indian tribes beginning in 1851. The content of this work was considered valuable scholarship by critics and included accurate illustrations by Eastman. Leading up to this study, Schoolcraft published Oneota, Characteristics of the Red Race of America in 1845, a work which was later published under the title The American Tribes .
