8vo., (8 ½ x 5 3/8 inches). Half title. Fine folding engraved frontispiece map and three folding engraved maps by T. Kitchin (one or two very short tears near mount, occasional spotting). Folding engraved plate (a bit browned and spotted). Contemporary tan calf, the spine in six compartments, with five raised bands, red morocco lettering piece in one (front joint cracked but holding). Provenance: 20th-century bookplate of "W. A. H." to front pastedown. Third edition (first published in 1780). With appendices not in the earlier editions, giving a list of the principal charts representing the Russian discoveries, a specimen of the Aleutian language, and tables of latitude and longitude. "The most important feature of this third edition is the inclusion of the supplement on Captain Cook, titled 'A comparative view of the Russian discoveries with those made by Captains Cook and Clerke; and a sketch of what remains to be ascertained by future navigators.' Coxe also mentions Cook's discovery of Hawaii" (Hill). Coxe was an English historian who travelled widely in Europe and Russia, he records the principal Russian discoveries and explorations made in northwestern America in their attempts to open communications with Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. The voyages and discoveries of Nevodsikoff, Serebranikoff, Trapesnikoff, Pushkareff, Drusinin, Kulkoff, Korovin, Glotoff, Solovioff, Otcheredin, Krenitzin, Levasheff, Synd, Bering, Chirikiv, and several others are also included.
