(1871) dated from V. & A., 4to, 270 x 230 mm, 10½ x 9 inches, brown cloth, gilt, black, red and white illustration to upper cover from Cock Robin, gilt lettered and decorated spine, 24 pages of text. 24 very good guarded colour plates printed by Kronheim from original designs by H. Stannard, Mrs. Hawtrey etc. Contains Cock Robin's Courtship, Marriage, Death, and Burial (Stannard); World-Wide Fables; Alphabet of Fruits; and The Hare and the Tortoise. Slightly worn at head and tail of spine and corners, tiny chip to cloth at corner of upper cover, few minor marks to cloth, covers bright, inner hinges partly cracked, binding firm, endpapers lightly creased, prelims slightly foxed. Occasional light margin soiling and spotting, some to guards, some pale fingermarks, 95 mm (3¾") closed tear to 1 text page margin, expertly repaired, few very short closed edge tears, maximum 10 mm (½"). A very good copy. World-Wide Fables contains 7 fables, 6 from Aesop, 23 very good images on 6 plates, with 4 scenes of dressed mice in The Town and Country Mouse. Alphabet of Fruits has 23 images on 6 plates, all very attractive scenes, most with children, each letter has a descriptive 4-line verse: 'A is for Apples, so rosy and round,/Which the children delight to pick up from the ground…. C is for currants, which Dora, you see/is picking for Tarts, from the red currant tree… W for the Walnuts at Christmas we eat,/And make of the shells such a capital fleet.'. All titles in this volume were issued singly but all are uncommon. Oppenheimer 547 is the Cock Robin item lacking the double page coloured plate, Oppenheimer 50 is the Alphabet of Fruits.
