Inscribed 1882, 4to, 270 x 230 mm, 10½ x 9 mm, dark red cloth, bevelled boards, gilt lettered, decorated black and gilt with a small chromo illustration of 2 little girls, no pagination. 15 very good colour plates including 3 splendid double page plates, 5 per story, printed by Kronheim. 3 stories: Cock Robin's Life and Death; Dame Trot and her Cat; and Punch and Judy. Verse text to all 3. Head and tail of spine worn and neatly strengthened at some time, corners slightly bumped and slightly worn, upper cover very bright. Several closed tears to tissue guards with old mends, 3 plates each have a closed tear extending slightly into the image, all repaired neatly, 1 is slightly chipped at the lower corner with an old paper repair which has slightly discoloured the same corner on 2 adjacent pages, neat inscription on reverse of front endpaper. A very good copy. The bright coloured plates to Cock Robin are by Henry Stannard; the double page plate for Dame Trot shows the white cat and the dog dancing; the Punch illustrations are lively and bright, the double plate shows a crowd of elegant people and children in evening dress in a drawing room watching a Punch and Judy show.
