Descripción Soft Cover. Condición: New. First Edition. The use of images of Chinese beauties in advertising commenced in late Imperial China, and reached its zenith in the 1930's and 40's, in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macau. Typically depicting languid beauties modelled on stage and singing stars of the era, the subjects were often portrayed in Western settings and 'liberated' pursuits - dancing, enjoying a smoke, or strolling in the latest fashions - all a far cry from the lives of average women of the time, tethered as they mostly were to mundane household and factory chores. Thus this art form was both a vehicle for commercial promotion and a stimulus for dreams of female liberation. Today these objects have become sought-after and often imitated collectors' items and the present catalogue illustrates some 80 of the finest examples of the genre. Text in trilingual English / Portuguese / Chinese; printing limited to 600 copies only. 123 pp., 84 col. plates, Size: 28 x 28 cm. Nº de ref. del artículo: 001291
