In the early part of the 20th century, both South Asian muslims and the Anatolian muslims were uffering from cruelty and pain inflicted by the foreign powers in collaboration with the non-Muslim populations in the two regions. Both the muslim Turks and the South Asian muslims were suffering agonies in the lands where they were or had been the 'Ruling Nations'. Between the years 1919-1924, Turkey, with a great deal of human and material sacrifices, managed to remain an independent country. In the same period, the South Asian muslims set their course firmly toward freedom and independence. During his historical period, Islam linked the two countries together, Islam was not just a common belief but a philosophy that gave birth and substance to the struggle for independence. Thus, the Turks and the South Asian muslims were joined together by the common struggle for freedom concelved and nurtured by the Islamic factor. This study concentrates on the Khilafat Movemenet in South Asia. Those activities of the Khilafat Movement that coincided with Turkish interest had been highlighted in the study. Also, the role of Islam in the struggle for freedom in South Asia and Islam's role (if any) in the Turkish struggle for independence will be discussed and analyzed in this book.
