Amish Tripathi s latest, Scion of Ikshvaku is book one in the Ram Chandra Series. I remember approaching The Shiva Trilogy series with very limited knowledge of Lord Shiva s mythology and heroic tales. So every page there was an amazing revelation that I absolutely enjoyed. But as I am well aware of the Ramayan, I began to read the Scion of Ikshvaku with a haughty sense, assuming I would know all the events that would transpire. But at the end of the book, I was so glad to realize that my false notions were disapproved. On the surface we have the loved (Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Bharat, Shatrugan) and despised (Queen Kaikeyi, Manthara, Raavan) characters of the Ramayan. But all these familiar characters are introduced in unfamiliar ways and thrust in unique situations making every chapter riveting. References to Meluha and Somras were a beautiful throwback to the Shiva Trilogy. Also as in the Shiva Trilogy, the battle sequences were meticulously detailed. The plotline involving sages Vashishta and Vishwamitra and Nagas were unnerving to read and I look forward to unearthing the mystery through the remaining books in the series. There was one particular plot about a very traumatic rape incident that was very revolting. But the ultimate justice meted out to the perpetrators, though horrific, seemed very apt and I wish such justice existed in our real world as well!
