Honoré de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright. His magnum opus was a sequence of short stories and plays collectively entitled La Comédie humaine, which presents a panorama of French life in the years after the fall of Napoleon I in 1815. Gustave Doré was a 19th-century French illustrator and painter who produced engravings for editions of The Divine Comedy, Don Quijote de la Mancha, and works by Rabelais and Balzac. Lydia Vázquez Jiménez is a professor of French philology at the University of the Basque Country.
