The Chevrolet Chevette was introduced in September, 1975 and produced for the 1976 through 1987 model years. It is Chevrolet's version of GM's worldwide T platform which was also sold as the Vauxhall Chevette, Opel Kadett, Isuzu Gemini and the Holden Gemini, among others. The Chevette essentially replaced the Vega as Chevrolet's entry-level subcompact import-fighter. The Chevette was functional and inexpensive, and was the best-selling small car in America for the 1979 and 1980 model years. It lacked the technological advances of the Vega, such as an aluminum-alloy engine block. Like the Vega, it has the rear-wheel drive layout, which dropped out of favor with the popularity of front-wheel-drive subcompacts such as the Volkswagen Rabbit.
