The most studied langauge in Irkutsk was Mongolian for the purpose of propagation Christianity among the Buriyat aborigines and to connect with the Chinese Ch'ing Empire's governors inUrga. However, the relations with Chinese officials required also Manchu and Chinese interpreters, the last ones especially from the middle of XIXth century, when the trade with China increased.
