A large number of hazardous chemicals and processes are employed in the chemical process industry. This leads to a high risk of accidents. Despite major advances in safety science and engineering, accidents keep occurring frequently across the world. With the spread and the density of population increasing in most parts of the world, alongside a continuing increase in the use of hazardous chemicals and processes, the risk of accidents has increased with each passing year. This has happened despite the controlling effect exerted by the advancements in safety sciences and engineering. The situation is particularly grave in fast-developing countries like India where the use of hazardous substances is growing as fast as the population-at-risk is multiplying. Hence it is necessary to pay ever-greater attention towards developing ways and means to prevent accidents as also to reduce the harm when accidents do take place. Dr. S. M. Tauseef has taken his BS (University of Shiraz) and MS (Sharif University of Technology) in Chemical Engineering, followed by PhD (Pondicherry University) in Environmental Technology. He has authored 3 books, 15 research papers and 2 book chapters. He has travelled widely and has had several stints with the industry.
