Icono del Nueva York de la década de 1980, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) se hizo inicialmente un nombre firmando grafitis con el nombre de "SAMO", antes de establecer su estudio y alcanzar rápidamente la fama con tan sólo 20 años. Aunque su carrera apenas duró una década, sigue considerándose una figura de culto del arte comprometido socialmente y un pionero en la mediación entre el grafiti y el arte de galería.
En su obra, Basquiat hizo uso de fuentes y medios diversos para crear un vocabulario artístico original y urgente, que supuso, además, una crítica mordaz contra las estructuras de poder y el racismo. En su práctica fusionó la abstracción y la figuración, la poesía y la pintura, mientras que sus influencias englobaban desde el arte griego, romano y africano hasta la poesía francesa, los ritmos del jazz y la obra de artistas contemporáneos como Andy Warhol y Cy Twombly. Los resultados son mezclas vívidas y viscerales de palabras, emblemas africanos, figuras de dibujos animados y manchas de colores vivos, entre multitud de otros detalles.
