Dr. Jones is a Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He also holds the rank of Professor Emeritus at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where, between 1967 and 1976, he served as Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Acting Chairman of the OB/GYN Department, and Secretary General of the university's Program for International Education. Born December 30, 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Jones attended Amherst College, where he received his B.A. in 1931, and Johns Hopkins, where he received his M.D. in 1935. He has been awarded honorary degrees from the University of Cordoba, Old Dominion University, Amherst College, University of Madrid, and the Medical College of Hampton Roads and received the Medal of the College of France and the Distinguished Service Award of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was made an honorary member of more than 20 foreign scientific societies, including the Fellowship ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.Following his retirement from Johns Hopkins in 1978, Dr. Jones and his late wife, Dr. Georgeanna Jones, moved to Norfolk, Virginia to accept faculty positions at the Eastern Virginia Medical School where they were challenged to establish an in vitro fertilization program which resulted in the birth of the first IVF baby born in the United States. Dr. Jones continues to hold key positions in the development of ethical standards for reproductive technologies. He is Past Chairman of the American Fertility Society Ethics Committee on Reproductive Technology. He and his late wife were the only American gynecologists invited by the Vatican to participate on a panel to advise Pope John Paul II in regard to assisted reproduction.At the age of 101, Dr. Jones spends several hours a day at his office at the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Norfolk.Author's Home: Norfolk, VA
