The United States had just proved skilled at defending itself from a world class and capable aggressor, Great Britain. The rest of the world was taking note. The “American Dream” of freedom and owning land, caused a tidal wave of dreamers with skills sweeping onto American shores. The Republic of Texas would be born with a battle cry, “Remember the Alamo!” Western settlements would reach into Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan, and increase up and down the mighty Mississippi. More land was needed for the challenges of growth as new states were being conceived to join the American Republic. The questions over whether slavery would be allowed in new territories and states only stoked an already heated debate, which was politically tearing the young nation apart.
