David Williams' novel could open the genius of the Stephensons to a new audience and foster a wider appreciation of the great achievements of the nineteenth century.
--J.Michael Taylor, Trustee of the Robert Stephenson Trust and a member of the Panel for Historical Engineering Works

Not just for anoraks, David Williams s novel Mr Stephenson s Regret detailing the lives of railway pioneers George and Robert Stephenson is also a love story: their love and thirst for knowledge and achievement, and the gentle romances of the two men and their respective spouses, Betty and Fanny. The novel chronicles the lives of the Stephensons, taking in their major achievements in engineering and railways: the creation of the first miners safety lamp, setting up the world s first locomotive manufacturing company in Newcastle and the success of the famous Rocket locomotive at the Rainhill Trials, to name but a few. David explains in his note at the beginning of the book that This is a novel, not a history , but it s a story beautifully and carefully told, and it s clear that David has researched the historical facts with a quiet passion, reflected in his crisp prose. And while George Stephenson was a master engineer, David is a master storyteller, selecting with precision a word here and an image there to illustrate his point. (I loved the description of Robert s encounter with a gravedigger while taking a shortcut through the graveyard one autumn evening on his way to the pit where George was to test his safety lamp the strange light hovering around the tombstones, an unknown repetitive noise, a figure emerging from below ground). David provides an informative trip through history, lacing it with gentle humour (the rabble of boys clinging onto the only bench at Robert s school, Aunt Nelly quite correctly taking fright at the pigs bladders filled with gas brought home for an experiment) and a Dickensian ability to paint a portrait of a character with his carefully-chosen prose (and indeed Dickens enjoys a cameo role in the novel). The description of the father-son relationship is realistic, sensitive and touching. It is perhaps best epitomised in an episode where Robert is almost electrocuted while emulating Benjamin Franklin s experiment with lightning. Once George has freed him from a near-murderous length of wet silk, They held onto each other, the boy s arms encircling his father s waist, legs caught between knees as if to prevent him being plucked from the earth by some elemental force. Robert clinging tight, felt another force; his father s fury within . David shows you the fuel behind George Stephenson s drive: the hazardous life of the pit, including the accident that left his father blind, overcoming a deprived background to achieve great things, not just for himself but for the greater good, and makes you into a Stephenson fan if you re not already. You re cheering on the sidelines as they clock up professional firsts and find happiness in their personal lives. This was a delightful read. Of course, I am biased, as David is a much-loved Vintage Script writer, and as I once walked in the footsteps of those Stephensons during my time in the north east. But I can truly say that if the reader in you enjoys a good story, beautifully crafted and sensitively told, then you will love this book. And the writers amongst you have much to learn from David s finely-tuned style. It s a joy to read and a story that keeps you wondering long after you ve put the book down. --Emma Louise Oram, Vintage Script Magazine

This richly detailed and meticulously researched storyline breathes life and a palpable sense of intimacy into these historical figures and immerses readers in an England embroiled in political and social upheaval as it teeters on the cusp of the industrial revolution. --Publishers Weekly

Reseña del editor

This incident-packed novel brings to dramatic life the pioneers of the railway age. Significant figures appear on the big canvas of history - Wellington, Peel, Dickens and Queen Victoria among them - but the story belongs as much to the modest mining community that is home to George and Robert Stephenson in the early years, and to their intimates, not least the women in their lives (who have remained all but anonymous in the biographies). Central to the narrative is the complex, often tense, relationship between father and son. Both have ambitions and desires that provide the engine for their achievements but also create a crisis of conflict that threatens to derail their journey at a crucial stage. In following the battles the Stephensons face, personally and as a partnership, much is revealed about the mores of nineteenth century society - about class division, self-interest and greed, indulgence and sexuality, repression and guilt - that may taint even the sweet taste of success. Mr Stephenson's Regret was a semi-finalist in the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. " This richly detailed and meticulously researched storyline breathes life and a palpable sense of intimacy into these historical figures and immerses readers in an England embroiled in political and social upheaval as it teeters on the cusp of the industrial revolution." Publishers Weekly 'The hallmark of any historical novel must surely be that, primarily, it tells an entertaining story whilst at the same time arousing an interest in the period or subject matter so that the reader may be encouraged to carry out some later research. With this novel about the pioneers of the railway age, George and Robert Stephenson, David Williams has succeeded admirably on both counts. Williams must be congratulated for bringing to life what is challenging subject matter in an interesting and thought provoking way.' ~ The Historical Novel Society
