Dougherty is an instructor in the Department of History at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he teaches world civilization and military history. Kevin J. Dougherty is an instructor at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in Charleston. He is a retired U.S. Army officer who spent five years teaching military history and world civilizations in the Department of History at the University of Southern Mississippi. Dougherty is the author of The Peninsula Campaign of 1862: A Military Analysis (University Press of Mississippi, 2005), Civil War Leadership and Mexican War Experience (University Press of Mississippi, 2007), Encyclopedia of the Confederacy (Thunder Bay Press, 2010) and Campaigns for Vicksburg, 1862-63: Leadership Lessons (Casemate, 2011). He lives in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
