In 1987, Clara Martínez Thedy embarked on a journey to Africa which was destined to change the course of her life. She had set out to fulfil a dream cherished since childhood: to travel deep into the African plains to meet the Maasai tribe and discover the wildlife of this mysterious continent.
Three decades later, as an experienced photographer, Clara relived this dream, and Africa Serena: 30 Years Later was born. Clara Martínez Thedy is a recognised artist of the lens whose work has been widely exhibited around the world, from shows in London, Miami, Paris and Abu Dhabi to collective exhibitions in Asia, South America and Europe. Her photographs have also been published in a variety of books and magazines, as well as forming parts of important private art collections.
Born in Bogota, to Uruguayan and Argentinian parents, she became a Dominican national when she moved there with her family as a child. She studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, and continued her training in Paris alongside George Fevre, the world-renowned photographic printer who worked with icons such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Josef Koudelka.
From the very beginning of her career, two elements have characterised her images: subtlety and serenity. Both can be seen shining through in the photographic journey found within the pages of this book.
