Canadian surgeon Lucille Teasdale and her husband founded Lacor Hospital in northern Uganda in 1961. For 35 years the two doctors treated such contagious diseases as malaria, TB, and AIDS, and Teasdale performed thousands of operations under difficult conditions. They lived through civil war, hostage takings, and epidemics. Teasdale received the highest humanitarian awards from the U.N. for her life's work in Africa. Deborah Cowley, an Ottawa-based writer and broadcaster, is also the author of Cairo, A Practical Guide and co-author of One Woman's Journey: A Portrait of Pauline Vanier.

She entered medical school in 1950 and was one of the first women in Quebec to receive a diploma as a surgeon. In 1961, she married an Italian doctor, Piero Conti, and went to northern Uganda with him. There, they established St. Mary's-Lacor Hospital. For over 35 years, they treated people with contagious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS. They continually expanded the services of the hospital and trained Ugandans to staff it. Dr. Lucille performed thousands of operations under extremely difficult conditions. When civil war broke out in Uganda in the early 1970s, she was forced to become a war surgeon. Even though repeated rebel attacks on the hospital put their lives in constant peril, the couple stayed on to help the people who depended on them for medical care. Before the world knew about HIV, Dr. Lucille contracted the virus when sharp bone fragments penetrated her rubber gloves in the course of performing an operation on a wounded soldier. She took precautions but contined to work for another ten years to save lives and raise funds for the hospital. She spoke out boldly on HIV/AIDS and became an inspiring example to people living with the disease. She died of AIDS in 1996 and is buried in Uganda, on the grounds of Lacor Hospital."
