Paint is today's and tomorrow's most versatile and effective decorating material. To the best of our knowledge, paint has been used in every age and culture across the world. Paint: The Fired Earth Book of Natural Colour aims to celebrate and approach the subject in all its sensual possibilities, taking its inspiration from the delicious images, tones and textures that surround us in our everyday world. Think colour before paint, and only then can we return to the practicalities of using it in our homes. Paint takes the landscape of nature as its inspiration. Colours are divided into families that are represented by a natural terrain to create a universe of colour: Arctic Tints explores a variety of whites, including snow, chalk and ice; Ocean Wash celebrates blues and mauves, inspired by the sea and hot azure sky; Forest Hues revels in lush leafy settings, springy moss and yellower tones of olive and mustard; rich earthy colours and deep reds form a natural family called Earth Tones; Desert Shades engage us through soft neutrals and pearly nuances, and finally, Kaleidescope creates an explosion of colour to joyfully explore contemporary bright colours.

Elizabeth Hilliard is a journalist and interiors writer whose articles have appeared in, amongst others, The Independent, The Observer and the Evening Standard. She is also the author of several books including The Tile Book and The Kilim and Tribal Rug Book, also in conjunction with the Fired Earth company. Stafford Cliff has had a long and impressive career in design. After joining the Conran Design Group in 1966, he art-directed the Habitat catalogue for 10 years and became Creative Director. As a freelance designer and Art Director, he has been involved in many projects including the production of books, including French Style. Fired Earth is synonymous with natural and timeless decorating, taking inspiration from the natural products that come from the land. Its range of products includes tiles, tribal rugs, natural floor and wall coverings, as well as paints.
