He notes how changing performance, usually for the better, and the need to supplement the rules of the game to ensure consistency when a variety of materials and designs may be in use has led to an increase in testing and specification. Roger Brown is a consultant specialising in polymer testing and standardisation. He was for 25 years responsible for all aspects, both commercial and technical, of the material and product evaluation services at Rapra Technology. He has been concerned with the testing, specification and quality control of sports surface installations since the early 1970s. He has acted as project leader/principal consultant for major development projects for the Sports Council, governing bodies of sport and BSI. He has produced specifications and quality schedules for, and carried out inspections and failure analysis of, numerous sports surface installations.
