This volume of papers is the result of a two day discussion on coins and archaeology held in 1973 at the Institute of Archaeology, London. They have stood the test of time, revealing the high degree of originality of numismatic and archaeological approach which the authors brought to their contributions. But in response to the demand for a reprint of the work revisions have been made to some of the papers which bring them firmly up to date. The new version of G. C. Boon's paper on counterfeits and copies in the Roman series takes into full account the great volume of research which has taken place in this area over the past fifteen years. Marion Archibald and D. M. Metcalf have both extensively revised their papers. In every case the authors have been given the opportunity to briefly review their work and to indicate the direction in which they see their aspect of numismatics developing. One entirely new paper has been included by Michael King on Roman Coins from Early Anglo-Saxon contexts, extending the work of S. Rigold and bringing up to date the available information on Anglo-Saxon access to Roman coinage.
