The Dirty South accurately depicts the complexities of a life growing up in many urban areas... a thoughtful novel. Part love story, part social commentary (Andrea Enisuoh New Nation)
Wheatle is a man with a mission. He believes that truth has to be articulated... Good stuff. (Sunday Express)
Wheatle conjures up a slice of black South London that is authentic, witty and gritty. (The Times)
Interesting... an entertaining - and occasionally engrossing - read. (Time Out)
Gripping. (Shortlist)
He's given a potent fictional voice to the often marginalised world of black urban youth. His writing is rich in the ever-changing dialogue of the streets... Wheatle illuminates the conflicted notions of masculinity, the lack of social opportunity and the smouldering gang violence that frame his characters' lives, while evoking the colourful, often pitiless landscape of Brixton. (Metro)
Witty and off-centre... Wheatle's style holds no prisoners and it's a story that's easy to relate to. (Life in Colour)
Refreshing... empowered with a blistering narrative voice, filled with the anger and desperation of marginalised youth... Wheatle is a sharp-eyed observer... he fills every page with hard-boiled authenticity... a welcome treat for fans of his oeuvre. (Courttia Newland Guardian)
It's a generation on from Wheatle's East of Acre Lane, and the soundtrack has changed from reggae to hip hop, but the career options open to young black males are still brutally limited. Set in Brixton, 20 years after the race riots, The Dirty South follows the adventures of Bricky teenager Dennis Huggins as he drifts into the easy, dangerous life of the shotter - or drug dealer - and discovers that hard as the struggle for respect on the streets is, the struggle for love is harder still. At least Dennis has involved parents looking out for him; too many of his friends have no guidance other than that offered by their fellow shotters, or the dubiously motivated black Muslims. Wheatle brilliantly evokes the temptations of the thug life for young black men growing up in London's Dirty South - a fast, compelling novel that offers no easy answers, but refuses to shy away from asking the difficult questions.
