"Wildlife at Risk" is a series which focuses on some of the best-known animals that are struggling to survive in our overcrowded world. Elephants are the subject of this book, and through it the reader learns about the African and Asian elephants and the struggle for their survival. The author firstly explains how elephants develop in their early years and adulthood, and the relationships within the herd. He describes the way they have adapted to their various habitats, such as the African plains, rainforests or mountains, and the essentials they need to live. Next it explains how humans use tame elephants as work animals, but have put their survival in jeopardy through the ivory trade. Finally the author discusses the measures which are being taken by national parks and reserves to protect the elephants from illegal ivory poachers and how, through educating and encouraging people, it is possible to conserve these animals.
