The last 30 years have seen a revolution in the production of graphics. Computers have had a profound effect on an industry which previously relied on working by hand. Focusing on the collaboration between graphic designers and their clients, this forward-looking book takes account of the many different applications for graphic design: brand identity; retail; film; architecture; civic identity; fashion; art; exhibitions; magazines and books; and the web. Through interviews with the designers, the clients, commissioning bodies, consumers and critics, it will offer an insight into the practice of graphic design in today's global culture.
Shaun Cole is Curator of Contemporary Programmes at the V&A Museum, specializing in fashion and graphic design. He has curated a number of exhibitions and events including Graphic Responses to AIDS (V&A 1996), Dressing the Male (V&A 1999), five innovative Days of Record and Black British Style (V&A 2004). His publications include Don We Now Our Gay Apparel: Gay Men's Dress in the Twentieth Century (2000). Jane Pavitt, Series Editor, is the author of Brilliant (V&A 2004) and editor of Brand.New (V&A 2000), and curated the highly successful V&A exhibitions of the same names. She is Senior Research Fellow at the V&A and the University of Brighton.
