Reseña del editor

Comic, poignant, richly imagined, effortlessly blending past and present, Allan Stein is a highly charged exploration of eroticism and identity.

After a sex scandal involving one of his students, an American high school teacher flees to Paris, only to find himself falling in love with the skateboarding son of the French family that has taken him in. To complicate matters, he is in France under an assumed name: that of his best friend, museum curator Herbert Widener. The real Herbert has bestowed upon his friend not only an identity but a mission: to track down Picasso’ s long-lost drawings of Gertrude Stein’s young nephew Allan.

As his search draws "Herbert" deep into the city’s art world – and into his own charade – the sad, gilded boyhood of Allan Stein comes to resonate with the narrator’s present infatuation in haunting, unexpected ways.

Contraportada

Matthew is persona non grata at the school where he teaches, courtesy of a false accusation from the parents of one of his students. But when his affair with the fifteen-year-old boy turns into reality, Matthew jumps at the chance to forsake Seattle for the leafy boulevards of Paris. Here, nobody knows his name – mainly because he is masquerading as his close friend, Herbert Widener, a museum curator currently intrigued by some missing Picasso drawings.

In Paris, 'Herbert' becomes embroiled in the mystery of the drawings, which feature Allan Stein, Gertrude's nephew and the possible model for Picasso's 1906 painting of a naked boy leading a horse. Yet the fascination of unravelling Stein's bizarre, poignant childhood is soon eclipsed by Matthew's overwhelming attraction to Stéphane, the teenage son of the household in which he is staying. As Matthew becomes more deeply involved in his pretence, in the intricacies of the Parisian art world and in the enigmatic life of Allan Stein, he also falls under the erotic spell of the young boy. Should he remain in Paris and face the consequences of his desires? Or flee home to the States?

Moving between the present day and the early years of the century, and blending fact with fiction, Allan Stein is an evocative and highly charged exploration of the nature of passion, obsession and identity.
