9781624650031: The Beauty in the Beast

The Beauty in the Beast will entertain, educate, and bring greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of the beauty that is in each creature and character design; whether it be for a fantastical fairy from an imaginary land or an unattractive creature emerging from the depths.

This book contains imagery that is provocative on both a conceptual and aesthetic level. Each chapter covers in great detail how the featured creature/character image was conceived and created.

An expert in the field, Neville Page breaks down the exact thinking process behind creating the characters as well as details the specific processes in which he achieves the final image. Additionally, he covers a wide range of subject matter and medium, from pencil sketching to computer sketching, from clay sculpting to digital sculpting using advanced software.

By the end of the book one will not only find oneself a little more empowered to realize his/her own beasts but have developed an appreciation for the grotesque, an empathy for the unusual, a respect of the terrifying, and a love for all things both attractive and off putting in the world of creature design.

In short, one will discover the The Beauty in the Beast.

About the Author:

Neville Page grew up in a creative family and as with many young boys in the late 70’s, “Star Wars” had such a profound impact that it inspired him to pursue the field of entertainment. He wanted to be in the sci-fi movies and at the time, did not even know that design existed. At 17, Neville packed up the car and drove cross-country to Hollywood to pursue the infamous dream.

After completing two years of acting school, he was primed and ready for the big screen. Auditions trickled in and tables kept getting served. Moments after deciding to follow his mother’s advice to quit the acting dream and go to school at ACCD, the phone rang with the big break. He was hired to appear on the soap opera “General Hospital.” Whether it was fate or typecasting, he was to play a waiter. Shortly thereafter, his character was dropped and the real career in design began.

Once at Art Center College of Design, he realized his true calling, graduated with honors in 1990 and immediately started a design consultancy with his roommate, who would eventually become his best friend and studio partner, Scott Robertson.

In addition to his extensive teaching appointments at ACCD, ACCD - Switzerland, Otis College of Art and Design and The Gnomon School of Visual Effects, Neville Page continues to grow an illustrious client list that includes: Jakks Pacific Toys, BMW subsidiary Designworks/USA, Mattel Toys, Nike, Rock Shox, Universal Studios’ “Men in Black”-The Ride, 20th Century-Fox, Fiat; and the feature films “Minority Report,” “Planet of the Apes”, “X-Men 2 & 3”, “The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe”, “Superman”, James Cameron’s “Avatar”, JJ Abram’s “Cloverfield”, Zach Snyder’s “The Watchmen”, Louis Leterrier’s “The Hulk”, JJ Abram’s “Star Trek”, and Ridley Scott's ""Prometheus"".

Neville Page is currently a judge on Syfy's hit series Face Off. In addition to his film and photography work, Neville continues to be a highly sought after design consultant for the entertainment, toy, and automotive industries.
