Sam Holder was ready to be called a man by his father. It took a stubborn stump and a broken trace chain for Sam to realize his father thought so. Like most young men he wanted to see new territory and make a name for himself. An encounter with a momma bear caused a change that could not be explained. Sam travels west with a friend, Boston Pike, and together they carve out a life in the territory of Missouri. The Missouri Ozark plateau will be the new home of the Holder family; however, it is a home they will have to build from the wilderness, leaving raiders, pirates, thieves and forest fires in their wake.
