Even after all of these years, I still feel the excitement when my alarm sounds at 3:30 in the morning. I still feel the desire of wanting to wake up and entertain thousands. I still feel the constant demand of leading my crew and performing at my peak level for four hours. I still feel the challenge of preparing nearly 100 hours of content every month and 1,200 hours of content every year. I still feel the need to deliver an instant punch line when my partner delivers the perfect setup. I still feel the pressure to draw large crowds to every personal appearance and of selling every personal endorsement. I still feel the responsibility of supporting my family in an industry that is unpredictable, with turbulence and turnover. I have no college degree. I have no fancy framed diploma. I have no fall back. I have no safety net. This is it. In fact, this has always been it. Sink or swim. My competitive fire still burns as hot as the day I started. The house is so quiet early in the morning. The kids are sound asleep and the only noise might be the clink of the ice machine or the wood floor cracking on a chilly winter morning. When I get out of the hot shower, I kiss my sleeping wife on the forehead and walk from my bedroom to my home office. I check the e-mails I’ve received overnight to find more than 200 new messages when I scroll down my inbox. The KMLE Nation never sleeps.I put on my driving glasses, grab my truck keys, and place what I have prepared for my morning show into my briefcase. I walk through the quiet, dark house to the kitchen where Paula has brewed my coffee on the automatic timer. It is set for 4:15 a.m. She worries about me driving when I am tired. She worries even more about me stopping at some barren convenience store to get my coffee at such an odd hour. She loves me.In only forty-five minutes I will be waking up thousands. I have repeated the same ritual for nearly three decades, but I still never take it for granted. I respect my listeners and realize they can choose from among thirty-five local radio stations, countless satellite radio stations, iPods, or personal CDs. The fact listeners choose my show every morning, despite so many other options, is a huge compliment. My two producers are now arriving at the station and my morning partner will soon follow. They will have the studio customized to our liking and Stacey will have a ton of great show material, news and traffic. I am spoiled by the best crew in radio. Our fifth member, Mark Curtis from Channel12, will join us at 7:30 a.m.As I drive west on Lincoln Drive, the road gradually rises from darkness to unveil the twinkling city lights and the long skyline of downtown Phoenix. My anticipation builds as I sip my coffee and flip my radio back and forth between news and sports to get a quick fix on any updates before we begin our own radio show. Soon, I arrive on a nearly vacant Central Avenue in the fifth-largest city in America. The city is still and calm. The streets are dark and empty.It is almost 5 a.m. when I arrive at the CBS building. Still holding my coffee and briefcase, I lean backwards against the swinging door and enter the studio. I make eye contact with my crew, as we all acknowledge each other with a smile, quick hello, or a simple nod of the head. We are all good friends but our morning is too busy for casual talk. The digital clock blinks to 4:59 a.m. I sit in my high swivel chair behind the control console, and almost in unison, my entire crew puts on headphones. It’s showtime.
