From the Boston Tea Party in 1773 to the first reading of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776, this comprehensive alphabet book chronologically follows the citizens of the thirteen colonies and their fight for representation. Ruled from afar by King George III of England, the colonists rebelled against his tyranny to declare a new nation.
Through historical descriptions, character profiles, and engaging artwork, young readers will learn how America achieved its freedom. As the Americans march toward liberty, author Catherine L. Osornio guides children through C is for Continental Congress, which was formed to defend the rights of the colonists, to R is for Revolution, which brought about a change in government. The ringing of bells and the blasting of cannons accompany the Declaration's completion as the citizens of America announce their right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Catherine L. Osornio, a literacy advocate, assisted in developing a reading program for Downey Child Care Center, targeting second through sixth graders. She has written more than sixty short stories for the program. Actively involved in the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Osornio has contributed articles to Clubhouse Jr. and Discovery Years, both Focus on the Family publications, and was a contributing columnist for crossmap.com.
A professional artist, Layne Johnson has created art for more than a dozen children's books, several of which have earned him honors and awards. To add authenticity to the paintings featured in The Declaration of Independence from A to Z, Johnson visited historical sites in Philadelphia, including Independence Hall, Liberty Bell Center, and Carpenters' Hall. Johnson is also the illustrator of Pelican's Voices of Pearl Harbor.
