When good-guy media and advertising personality Jim Leslie is unexpectedly murdered, there are no witnesses. Hard-nosed journalist Bill Keith throws himself into a tumultuous investigation that reveals the police commissioner, George D'Artois, of Shreveport, Louisiana, is likely behind the crime. As Keith, along with five city lawmen and other dedicated reporters at the Shreveport Times, delves deeper, he discovers D'Artois's involvement in corrupt political ventures and connections with mob boss Carlos Marcello. While the investigation unfolds, the city of Shreveport is torn between facts and rumors, as more lives are endangered by the commands of the police commissioner.
Bill Keith worked for several years as an investigative reporter for the Shreveport Times before serving as city editor at the Shreveport Journal. During his time as a journalist, he also served as a war correspondent in Vietnam and as a freelance writer in West Berlin, Tokyo, and the Philippines.
