Exerpt from Your Skeletal System
Fun Facts: Bone is alive! It grows and changes shape throughout your life. Your skeleton is one-third living tissues and two-thirds water and minerals. The minerals calcium and phosphorus give your bones strength and make them hard.
Your bones are 4 times as strong as concrete. They can be stronger than steel, but they weigh 4 times less! A 2-inch block of bone can hold the weight of an elephant!
Babies are born with over 300 bones, but adults have only 206 bones. What happens to the other 94 bones? As you grow, some smaller bones join to make larger bones.
Measure yourself when you first get out of bed in the morning and then right before you go to bed at night. What do you find? People are taller in the morning than in the evening. This is because the discs between the bones in the spine squash down during the day and go back to their full height when you sleep.
