When Antony Fisher died in San Francisco on July 9, 1988 at age 73, four weeks after being knighted in the Queen's birthday honors list, the world was largely unaware of him or his influence. He was not listed in Who's Who. He was not well known to the British or American media. He had never held elected office. The belated knighthood was almost the sole public recognition he received during his lifetime.

Fisher founded the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in London, which later had a profound influence on Margaret Thatcher. He cofounded the Manhattan Institute in New York, and played an instrumental role in setting up the Fraser Institute in Canada, the Institute for Liberty and Democracy in Peru and, later, the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) in the United States. In all, Sir Antony helped start more than three dozen think tanks and the Atlas Economic Research Foundation, which helps create and develop think tanks around the world. In this work, he had the support and encouragement of his second wife, Dorian Fisher, who generously supported this growing movement until her death in 2007.

Other businessmen -- some vastly richer than Fisher -- have used their wealth and influence to pursue political goals. But it is difficult to think of any whose influence has been as pervasive or who pursued his task more single-mindedly over 40 years, and with such scant regard to personal fame or advantage.
