Excerpt from Canada and the United States: Some Aspects of Their Historical Relations
Geographically the United States and Canada form a Single unit; politically and to_ some extent socially they are divided and unique. The international boundary, cutting laterally through the continent, has in physiographic terms no logical or rational explanation; it is a thoroughly human product. Invisible and illogical as that boundary is, however, it has in certain ways acted as a barrier more effective than a mountain range; marked divisions more radical than an ocean need produce.
The proximity of the United States forms a constant and a serious problem to Canadians. Comparatively weak in numbers, limited in present wealth, Of secondary importance in world af fairs, Canada cannot escape the inevitable comparison with her colossal, wealthy, and potent neighbor. Americans, on the other hand, are seldom reminded of the existence of their northern kinsmen in spite of the fact that the Dominion ranks first among the customers of the United States, that it sells more to the Re public than does any other state, that it is the locus Of more than one fourth of all American foreign investments, and that the total trade between the two countries far exceeds that of any other trading communities.
