Excerpt from Le Peintre-Graveur Illustré (Xixe Et Xxe Siècles), Vol. 9: Edgar Degas

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This remarkable book offers a thorough examination of Edgar Degas's impressive body of prints, a less widely known aspect of his artistic career that nevertheless holds great significance. The author provides a meticulous catalogue raisonnà of Degas's approximately sixty etchings and lithographs, many of which are exceedingly rare and have never been formally studied until now. The book situates Degas's printmaking within the wider context of the significant developments occurring in the medium during the latter half of the nineteenth century. It illuminates Degas's innovative and experimental approach to printmaking techniques, such as etching, drypoint, soft-ground etching, aquatint, and lithography, through which he conveyed his unique vision and artistic sensibilities. Beyond its technical merits, this book delves into the thematic richness and depth of Degas's prints. It explores his fascination with the ballet, horse racing, and female nudes, examining how he captured the essence of movement, form, and gesture in these subjects. The author also sheds light on Degas's profound influence on other artists, including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and his pivotal role in the development of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Ultimately, this book offers a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of Degas's printmaking, highlighting its experimental nature, technical virtuosity, and profound insights into the human condition and the changing world of late 19th-century France.
