Martin Luther and John Calvin were in total agreement on one thing: the need for reform in the Catholic Church. But the two and their followers had substantial disagreements over their own doctrines.
Enter the Heidelberg Catechism. One of the most important works of the Reformed Church today, the catechism’s name is derived from the city in which it was compiled and first printed. It is also sometimes styled the Palatinate Catechism, from the territory (the Palatinate) of the prince (Frederick III) under whom it was prepared.
The Catechism, in its present form, consists of 129 questions and answers. It is divided into three parts:1. Of the misery of man. 2. Of the redemption of man. 3. Of the gratitude due from man (duties, etc.).
Note. This Catechism is fully based on the Scriptures. The references to Scripture are indicated in parentheses with a letter. For example, the letter (a) points to the texts (a) placed after the answer.
