Maggie and Sam Lewis vacation with their daughters vacation on a coral island off the Yucatan peninsula. Hiking, they enter a Mayan temple and encounter an evil creature in the form of a huge scorpion. The scorpion sends each to a different place and time. Each sets out to find the others and each deals with enemies and allies along the way. Everything is at stake and nothing is certain until the end.

Bill Brown is the Chief Environmental Officer of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in the Federal government where he oversees environmental science and regulation for offshore energy development. His former posts include Science Advisor to Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, President of the Bishop Museum in Hawaii, President of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, and President of the Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts. He has a PhD in Zoology from the University of Hawaii, where he studied seabirds on an uninhabited volcanic island, and a JD from Harvard Law School. He lives in Washington, DC, with his wife Mary McLeod, and they have two daughters, Julia and Emma.
