Abigail Pevy and Dylan Ryan find they are both headed to Texas at the worst possible time, 1836. Texas is at war with Mexico and settlers are streaming both in and out of the area. Those that run away fear the advance of Santa Anna's army. Those running toward Texas do so to claim land before the new government can be established. Outlaws that roam the shadow lands on both sides of the Sabine River separating Texas from Louisiana are cut-throats and thieves hoping to steal horses and anything of value. They know about the legend of finding gold bullion along the old highway from the Red River down to Alexandria, Louisiana. They search for Dylan's uncle, Mort Lems, who has information about the route the mule trains once traveled hauling bullion. Amid attacks from outlaws and wagon trains determined to get to Texas, Dylan and Abigail cross paths. It's a hard trail to ride, but the two fight their way through obstacle after obstacle to reach their final destination. They are tested, their faith is tested. Life in Texas is tough. It always has been.

A sixth generation Texan, the author's family resided in Texas prior to the days of the Texas Revolution. Their stories have been handed down generation to generation, giving the author insight into the customs and way of life in the early settlements and the determination of those brave souls to survive.
