Miss Justine thinks learning should always be fun! After she takes a new teaching job at an Indian reservation, Miss Justine decides to use the beach as her outside classroom. Her students head to the beach with boxes to hold all their collected treasures, and they soon discover that math, history, and science can be exciting.
After the students gather rocks, feathers, and shells, they return to the schoolhouse with Miss Justine where they begin discussing all their treasures. Sorting, adding, and counting shells becomes a math lesson. Recycling feathers, shells, and twigs becomes an art project. Feathers transform into dream catchers. Shells turn into beads. Then Miss Justine decides to use the feathers for something even more special-rewards for good work!
Miss Justine and the Feathers shares the entertaining story of how a teacher brings new life to boring subjects as she uses simple ideas intertwined with American Indian traditions to show her students how everything is connected in their world.
Janette Simonson studied animal husbandry at the SUNY at Cobleskill, New York, and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in agricultural education. She is a former teacher and parent advocate in her school district. Janette and her husband live in Long Island, New York, where they enjoy spending time with their two children.
