John was a sailor for ten years, during which time he drove tankers around the oceans of the world, luckily without causing any major catastrophies. John then "swallowed the anchor" and, as he puts it, degenerated into an academic. Nearly thirty years later, as Dean of a Faculty in a London University, he took early retirement so that he could care full time for his wife, Shirley who was, by then, suffering from dementia. Working from home, he found time to edit a professional journal while coping, as best he could, with the domestic happenings that are related in his book. This was, for him, a "fish out of water" situation in which he was frequently faced with a challenge for which his previous careers had left him totally unprepared. Fortunately, John was able to see the funny side of many such episodes and he wrote "Caring for Shirley" to share these with his fellow carers, and with anyone else who might be interested in reading about his experiences.
