What's in a rose? "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" (Shakespeare). This may be no rose at all. Many of these pieces smell anything but sweet. But -- and for what it's worth -- this is what a so-called "emerging writer" goes through both to work out his craft and to find his voice. Many of these stories might strike you, generous reader, as self-indulgent. If so, my apologies. What I've always tried to keep in mind as I wrote was Aristotle's dictum -- which is, roughly: "A story must have a beginning, a middle and an end." Pure and simple. That, and it must keep the reader's attention. If I've failed to capture and keep your attention, the fault is entirely mine -- and I offer my apologies.
