These are poems written between 1957 and 2010. Many of the shorter ones were published in various magazines; most of the longer and, I think, more important ones appear here for the first time. My poems are not intended to entertain, though I hope they will be enjoyed. They are intended to be epistemological explorations. Like theology and mathematics, poetry is a system for manipulating abstract symbols in order to generate maps of possible realities. Poetry is also a music for the solo voice. Hence the musical aspects of poetry--rhyme, meter, scansion, stanza farms--are essential disciplines, just as music theory and notation are for a musician. They are also fun to play with. I write about many things: love, sex, faith, cosmology, consciousness, religion . . . and whatever else I happen to find interesting.
Aidan A. Kelly, Ph.D., earned his B.A. and M.A. in Creative Writing at San Fracisco State College in the 1960s. In addition to working for 30 years as a science book editor, he earned his Ph.D. in advanced humanities in a cooperative program between the Graduate Theological Union and the University of California, Berkeley, in 1980. He has been teaching at the university level since 1979, primarily in the humanities. He is the author or co-author of a dozen books, most of them concerned with new religious movements. He lived for most of his life in the San Francisco Bay area, then, with brief sojourns to New York City, for ten years in the Los Angeles area. Since 1997 he has lived in Tacoma, Washington, except for another sojourn through Texas and New Orleans for several years. He finds it amusing to see how many people are annoyed by his not fitting into any of their boxes.
