This unique presentatt'on not only demonstrated the sct"entific value of these abort"ginal songs in the study of the development of 1ftusic, but suggested their availability as themes, novel and cha1'acteristic, for tIle A merican composer... It was felt that this availabil£ ty would be greater if the story, or the ceremony wht'ch gave rise to the song, could be k1'tOW1t, so that, in developing the the'me, all the movements might be consonant with the circumstances that had i1zspired the motive.
