This book is about the importance of the relationship between doctor and patient and the significance of effective communication within this relationship. It takes into account the psychosocial factors alongside the biomedical which is crucial in understanding the development of ill health, treatment pathways and recovery. The book assists doctors in a very practical way to consider and improve how they interact with patients. In my opinion this book is not only a must read for doctors but other health care disciplines. I would recommend this as an addition to traditional texts. -- The book starts with why communication skills are important to focus on; in explicating this the considerable literature on patient centred medicine, negative impact of undergraduate training in medicine on communication skills, and the recent Medical Leadership Competency Framework are cited. Also important are self awareness of the doctor, and the ability to manage the impact of emotions in day to day practice. The doctor's ability to manage emotions, theirs and their patients' in the therapeutic relationship, is linked to stress of doctors as well as the key to good medical practice. There are gems amongst the plethora of literature cited; one of these at the end of chapter one; "...we communicate naturally by being ourselves. We learn about ourselves in order to understand others" . This is a good reference book for GPs, Psychiatrists, trainees and trainers, and communication skills teachers in all areas of medicine. The latter chapters deal specifically with managing difficult situations, breaking bad news, life and death situations and managing aggressive patients. It is a book that can be used to develop the argument as to why do communication skills training, and how to do it. The evidence here is communication skills trainings are most effective if they are at least 3 days long, and are experiential. --Dr Jale Punter, Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy
