Recently, interest in nutritional medicine and how to use it properly has increased enormously, and many people are already taking supplemental vitamins in larger than standard dietary doses. Orthomolecular medicine believes that the basis for health is good nutrition. It uses nutrients and normal (''ortho'') constituents of the body in optimum amounts as the main treatment.
Born on a Saskatchewan farm in 1917, Abram graduated with a B.S. in agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan in 1938. He also has a Master's Degree in agricultural chemistry and a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He got his M.D. from the University of Toronto in 1949 and completed psychiatric training in 1954. His early work led to the use of vitamin B3 in treating schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions and he demonstrated the effectiveness of niacin as an anticholesterol treatment. Dr. Hoffer was involved in the formation of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine and has published over 600 reports and articles as well as 30 books. Recently, he was awarded the Dr. Rogers Prize for his contribution to alternative and complimentary medicine.
