Reseña del editor:
First published as a serial novel in the Atlantic Monthly, Henry James' novel steers readers in a different direction than his typical works - exploring the political and violent topic of assassination. It is said that while walking the streets of London, James first conceived the central character Hyacinth. Born in a bastion of peace and tranquility, Hyacinth is corrupted by revolutionary politics and transforms into an agent of destruction on behalf of his political fervor.

Impoverished in his youth, Hyacinth has a heightened awareness of the misery that surrounds him. Against his better judgment, Hyacinth is pulled into revolutionary politics and makes a vow he may soon regret: to assassinate a major political figure. Enter the beautiful Princess Casamassima. Hyacinth becomes divided between Princess Casamassima's world of wealth and luxury and his own bleak world of staunch moral rectitude. He struggles with the gross disconnect between his political beliefs and personal desires.

From a scholarly approach, The Princess Casamassima is an interesting departure from James' other works, although his novel "The Bostonians" also dealt with political issues, albeit in a less tragic manner. This book stands out as a unique read. For the casual reader, this book explores personal conflicts and the challenges we all face when circumstances clash with our desires. Hyacinth is an outsider, and his story can connect with the common man. He can also be compared, as he frequently was by James, to some of literature's greatest characters - Hamlet and Lear. The personal struggles Hyacinth deals with are what make this book intriguing. The ultimate solution he decides upon is what makes it a tragedy. Overall, an interesting novel by James, and an interesting addition to his already massive list of literary classics.

The following computer-generated description may contain errors and does not represent the quality of the book.

Miss Pynsent said; she had a fluttering wish to assent to every suggestion made by her visitor, whom she regarded as a high and rather terrible personage. To look for the little boy she came out of her small parlour, which she had been ashamed to exhibit in so untidy a state, with paper patterns lying about on the furniture and snippings of stuff scattered over the carpet she came out of this some what stuffy sanctuary, dedicated at once to social intercourse and to the ingenious art to which her life had been devoted, and, opening the house door, turned her eyes up and down the little street. It would presently be tea-time, and she knew that at that solemn hour Hyacinth narrowed the circle of his wanderings. She was anxious and impatient, and in a fever of excitement and complacency, not wanting to keep Mrs. Bowerbank waiting, though she sat there, heavily and consideringly, as if she meant to stay; and wondering not a little whether the object of her quest would have a dirty face. Mrs. Bowerbank had intimated so definitely that she thought it remarkable on Miss Pynsent spart to have taken care of him gratuitously for so many years, that the humble dressmaker, whose imagination took flights about every one but herself, and who had never been conscious of an exemplary benevolence, suddenly aspired to appear, through out, as devoted to the child as she had struck her solemn, substantial guest as being, and felt how much she should like him to come in fresh and frank, and looking as pretty as he sometimes did.
